So we're on our way and so is my blog. I will attempt to keep you abreast (snigger) of our movements, as they happen. Apologies in advance for the badly written prose and intermittent coarse language.
Let me begin.
6 weeks with the kids in Europe with a touch of Hong Kong action is on the way. France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and the aforementioned Hong Kong are all on the itinerary. We are frothing at our respective bungs in anticipation.
The journey to Europe began with a 2 hour delay in our flight from Auckland to Hong Kong. As you all know (yes you - the privileged few reading this now who get to receive this drivel), I don't do late. But 5 hours early is fucken ridiculous.
When we finally got off the ground, our 11.5 hour long flight got us into our hotel beds in hong Kong at 1am local time, 5am Waiheke Island time. Thats a long day. We were all pretty tired but were all perky as the adrenaline coursed its way through our veins. First time in Hong Kong for us all and what a site to behold. Metropolis central - really amazing.
We are in Hong Kong for 28 hours - this gave us one full day to do what we needed to do. And true to form, what we need to do is eat. Our main mission was to find this tiny yum char restaurant that holds a Michelin star - the cheapest Michelin starred restaurant in the world. We rose at 6.30am after 5.5 hours of deep, dog tired sleep, got our shit together and were off in search of the restaurant.
Hong Kong is hot and humid. And right now, our very friendly taxi driver tells us that its hot for Hong Kong. This is the hottest time of the year. Having said that, nothing was going to deter our drive to find this little gem of gastronomy.
To cut a long story short, we found it. We had the most sublime meal. Steamed dumplings that were as light as air. BBQ pork buns that were again beautifully textured and were the perfect mix of sweet and salty. Spring rolls - crispy wafer thin pastry filled with egg white and prawns so that they were crunchy on the outside and smooth on the inside. A stick rice thing cooked and wrapped in a banana leaf filled with fragrant, delicious pork. We ate until we could eat no more. And believe me, we gave it a good crack and it was only 8.15 in the morning. The total bill was 190 Hong Kong dollars - or about $31 NZ dollars. Unfuckenbelievable and unfuckenforgettable.
We then spent the rest of the day visiting the nearby Hong Kong island via the Star ferry and went to the highest point of Hong Kong where the view of the sprawling city below was breath taking.
Back on the ferry then a wander through the back streets and we stumble on an amazing little place that specialised in the most incredible grilled roast chicken. Photos of all of the above to follow!
We are now in our little room getting ready to hit the night market before we get picked up from our hotel to make the 11.30pm flight to Paris via Zurich. Another long flight but hey, when the end result is Paris you just have to suck it up and not for the first time realise just how lucky we are to have the opportunity to do all this together.
Talk soon, love the Schwarzies
